*Beyond the Bag Controversy*i think that the article is good and very true. We should just keep recycling.

ReplyDeleteI read the article "Protesters Face Off for 7th Day in Yemen" by Laura Kasinof on the *New York Times* website. This article was about the protesters in Yemen and the police doing everything that they can to keep them down. You can plainly see that the author has an opinion because she is constantly using harsh vocabulary towards the Yemeni government and uses quotes that make the government look good then tells you why that quote is wrong and rebudles with a quote from a protester and claims the protester is in the right.
I read a article from the *The Oregonian* about banning platic bags, in this article people say they should not ban the bag because the bag has many different uses for it. It can be used for almost everything, grabage bad, dog pooper scooper, and so on. The author does not agree with this ban because he use's the bags for almost everything he does in his daily life

I read, "What the South Got Wrong" from *The New York Times* by John Ashworth. The author emphasizes that the South's actions where a mistake when they seceded from the Union because they knew the newly elected president Abraham Lincoln would abolish slavery. But the south didn't understand that Abraham's idea for abolishing slavery wasn't to get rid of it altogether, but to stop any new states from having slavery. The author refuted this because South thought it was an end to slavery but technically it would have still continued and they didn't understand it and seceded without much thought.

Article Title: Patient Sotiropoulos trudges toward title
In this article, George Sotiropoulos has a chance to go for the UFC lightweight championship title. Instead he wants to go for the title of the best mixed martial artist. Sortiropoulos knows his championship title will come in time, but for now he doesn't want to worry about something as trivial as a title shot. George Sortiropoulos thinks long term about his future and is waiting patiently for his title.

I found this article "All about the Big 12: Inconsistent KU" at (sports.yahoo.com)
In this article I found that Kansas state may have looked impressive last Monday when they won 84-68 they also have been slacking. There are many things that they need to improve on. But in this article the author thinks that Kansas plays better when they cut Josh Shelby's time out on the court. He thinks that Shelby should spend some time on the bench because he has missed nine games and many practices. He thinks that even thought its half way through the 12th season its obvious that he still isn't comfortable out on the court. But in the past he has had some good shoots and throws but the author is pretty set on not wanting Josh Shelby to play.
"Out of Control in the House" by *The New York Times*.
ReplyDeleteThe author says that the statistic given was more than three times higher than reality to refute when Mr.Boehner says that 200000 federal jobs could be lost.
If the government does not buckle down and remove the things that are actually unnecessary to the people instead of cutting things randomly to get more money for them-selfs, then things are going to go downhill quickly.
I read "Freezing The Poor" from *The Oregonian*
ReplyDeleteThis article tells the opinion of Amy Goodman and what she thinks about Obama's Ridiculous Health care plan. Most Americans are without health insurance and are starving to death. People are freezing, starving, and homeless and many without jobs. She thinks Obama needs to do something about it.
I think Amy is right. Obama should help those who are in need of clothing, food and warmth. We should help the people around us instead of being selfish and worrying about ourselves.

*The Oregonian* had a great article headlined "Slippery slope ahead: monetized health risks". It's about hospitals in certain states are denying job applications to smokers. The author does not like this ban at all. Th author writes that a smoking ban in the workplace is something different entirely than a ban on smokers in the workplace itself. The ban is illegal in Oregon and almost a dozen other states, but lawmakers are fighting it because if the problem of the health care costs in the nation. I think it's kinda stupid that people would ban smokers because it's not good for the company. I completely understand not allowing smoking in the workplace, but banning the person altogether is ridiculous.
THE CIVIL MAJORITY
ReplyDeleteDidn’t call anyone a moron today? That’s normal
This article was about trying to be nicer in the work environment even if you got fired or someone call you "idiot" It also talks about responding to e-mails even if their mean politely.
In the article, "Budget Politics," by Ej Dionne Jr in the *Oregonian shows how taxes are increased. The authors opinion is that taxes should not be raised but the president or other people involved with this should take action and learn more about what needs to be changed not just charge people for more money that they may not have. I think taxes should not be raised. People in the government need to realize that some people don't have the money to pay for taxes. Taxes are not fun for people you always pay taxes. All the money people make from their jobs go to taxes.

I read "Travis Rice's The Art of Air teaser", by Heather Hendricks. This article talks about Travis Rice's new movie "The Art of Air". This movie is about his life as a snowboarder. He discovers new terrain all over the world for him to shred on. They record him going off of jumps and flying off of cliffs. This movie was directed by him as well. This shows what snowboarding is all about. I think this author is excited to see this movie because she can't stop talking about how great of a snowboarder he is and how cool this movie will be. I liked this article because i like snowboarding.

Today I read "The Civil Majority" from *The Oregonian*. This article talks about how more and more people are being less civil with their problems with other people. The author of this article blames technology for this issue because back in the day when you had to talk to people face to face about issues and irritations, it was a lot easier to bite your tongue and stay polite. But in these days where most work communication is based around technology, it is easier not to just bite your tongue and instead say how you really feel because it is quick and easy with the click of a button. The author refutes this argument by agreeing how easy it is to say how you really feel instead of being polite. But disagrees with being rude. I agree with the opinion of the author in this article because I have been in the situation where I have had to choose whether or not to bite my tongue or say how I really feel over text, email, or other internet sites.
I read " Nets resume talks for Anthony '' from *Yahoo Sports.* The article talks about all of the different possible places Nugget's Forward Carmelo Anthony could end up before the trade deadline on February 24th. Everybody from the New York Knicks to the New Orleans Hornets are involved. The author most likely wants Carmelo to go to the New York Knicks because he has about 4 times more info on them and the trade situation than the rest of the teams in on the trade. I love the NBA, so i liked this article and can't wait to see where Carmelo Anthony ends up after February 24th.

I read"Rankings: Silva vs. GSP" on *Yahoo Sports*. Anderson Silva vs. Georges St. Pierre. No subject brings up more intense opinion than the question of who is better among the UFC’s two most dominant fighters. I personally think that Silva is a more dominant fighter, but i would like to see GSP win because I've always been a fan of him since i've been watching the UFC. The fans want to see the fight. UFC president Dana White wants to match them up. Recently Anderson Silva knockout victory over Victor Belfort at UFC 126, his 13th straight win. meanwhile, was nearly as much a victim of Silva’s kick as was Belfort. GSP,The UFC welterweight champ, winner of seven straight fights and 30 consecutive rounds, dropped from 12 first-place votes to seven this month and finished six points behind Silva. So I think the author and I want the fight to happen and it probably will. So overall I think Silva will win.
ReplyDeleteI read "Traffic jams" by Rodger Dalgleish from *THE OREGONIAN* The drivers said there are many cars on the road, they think there are traffic jam there in the morning and evening. The author said there will more traffic jam, if people build more apartment houses. I think this article is really true because now there are many population and there are traffic jam every morning and evening, I think because the cars make convenience for people.

I read "Mrs. Bush, Abstinence and Texas" in the *New York Times.*
ReplyDeleteThis article was about Barbara Bush raising an alarm and Gov. Rick Perry’s personal experience with sexual abstinence. Underperforming, overcrowded schools being deprived of more and more resources anywhere. When it happens in Texas, it’s a national crisis. The birth rate there is the highest in the country, and if it continues that way, Texas will be educating about a tenth of the future population. It ranks third in teen pregnancies. Besides reducing services to children, Texas is doing as little as possible to help women, especially young women to avoid unwanted pregnancy. The governor is promoting abstinence because to get birth control in Texas you must have parental consent. And really, what kids are going to ask there parents that just so they can have sex? I think it's a good idea to promote abstinence, but I don't know how affective it will be.
My opinion on the downtown drummer and the Portland problems is that if you can't tolerate the noise then go along with. Take action, instead of calling for disturbance go down to the station and file an complaint. I think that if it bothers you just wear ear plugs.
ReplyDeleteHealth plans are asking people to pay out of pocket due to the high premiums. Though asking to pay out of pocket, no one is turned away due to pre-existing conditions countering an industry the practice of shunning. Cigarette smokers are being estimated to cost about $3,000 dollars more for health care. In many places like Florida, Massachusetts and Texas, they are being denied medical for the people who do smoke.
ReplyDeleteThough this is legal, it is allowing people to follow a very thin line of what is legal and what is not. Banning smoking from the work place helps the workers who don't smoke stay away from the second hand smoke. Many feel like thats okay, but many states are denying the jobs to smokers just because they do smoke. In my opinion that is wrong. I understand not allowing them to smoke in the work place but I do not feel that they should not allow you to work because of it. They say that you can't smoke, yet they sell them to people. I think it's hypocritical. This law is illegal in Oregon and I feel that that is a good thing. I don't agree with smoking but everyone should be offered the same opportunity then the next person. No one is better qualified or better then the next just because they don't smoke. They just will have better health.

I read the article "Hopping Aboard the Convenient Ban-The-Bag Bus," by Dave Lister, from the *Oregonian*. The article is about the bill stating that plastic bags are to be ban, due to the amount of litter and garbage they produce. The author explains that he liked using the plastic bags, for he used them for many things, "You could use them as lunch bags, garbage bags, storage bags or pet waste collectors. My toolbox is full of them, doing the duty of keeping the finish nails separated from the ring shanks. I use them for all kinds of things." -Dave Lister. I agree with the author, but if we want Oregon to be a cleaner and less litter or a place, then maybe the ban of plastic bags will help. After all, you can always buy the reusable bags that last for a long time to do your shopping.

Brutal Crackdown in Moderate Bahrain
ReplyDeleteBY NICHOLAS D. KRISTOF
*The New York Times*
This article is about the violence happening in Bahrain. The pro-democracy movement has been building for years, recently overthrowing dictatorships in Egypt and Tunisia. This resulting in the Bahrain government using brutal force on protesters. The author writes that usually numb to sadness in the news, this story broke his heart. Bahrain is a loyal ally of America. "When a king opens fire on his people, he no longer deserves to be ruler. That might be the only way to purge this land of ineffable heartbreak." He also adds. The author is not on the Bahrain Government's side. He thinks that they have no right to be using such cruel ways of punishment for just speaking their opinion. He uses words such as: heartbreaking, lies, stunning brutality, preposterous, and other words to describe just hot horrible the Bahrain government was to their people. I agree with what this author is saying. From how he describes it, just a group of peaceful protesters were attacked with unnecessary force. I think that if the King sends troops to kill his people when they are not threateningly protesting is in fact heartbreaking as the author describes.
"Zidell gets green light on cleanup" by Scott Learn is about cleaning up the Willamette river and removing contaminated river sediment. The author agrees with this because he only shows one side of the opinion. In the beginning of the story he writes "Federal fish biologists have given the go-ahead for one of the biggest Willamette River cleanup." In my opinion I agree with the author to. Because biologists are very well taught, that makes me agree with them.

I read "THE POLITICS OF PAPER VS. PLASTIC" in *The Oregonian.* This article is talking about the ban of plastic grocery bags. The author wants to keep the plastic bags and not have to pay the five cents for paper bags. The author thinks that supporting politicians have a good reason to promote the bag ban because they want people to think that they are trying to be green. I agree with the author because the bag ban is pointless and we will save money and time by just using the old fashioned plastic bags.
ReplyDeleteDanny Morrison, Period 3
The author of the article "Didn't call anyone a moron today? That's normal" from *The Oregonian* thinks that manners are essential. She thinks that you should be kind no matter how angry you are. Like when you're driving and someone cuts you off, your immediate reaction is to honk or yell "Moron!" out the window. The author encourages us to keep our temper, too. She says that most people bite their tongue and keep their comments to themselves, and the people who don't end up headlines in newspapers and such. "Every week brings a new story about someone being rude, usually via e-mail or social networks." she says. She refutes that people should not be rude, no matter how angry you are, even though people are rude to each other all the time.

I read a very ridiculous and sad commentary from "sports.yahoo.com." The author of the article tried to say that the lakers might not be as good as people say. Just because they've lost a few close games the author believes the Los Angeles Lakers are not as good as some of the other teams in the NBA. When really, they're already the best team. Even other players, from other teams still think they're the most talented team in the league. Honestly, I think this author is crazy, or insane, or something. He should be fired.
ReplyDelete-Cody Hole
James Pray--- I read "Didn't call anyone a moron today? Actually, that's normal" from *The Oregonian* The writers opinion is how insults are held back eye to eye, but across the internet people go wild on them. She doesn't refute any statements but rather uses examples of headlines for online slanders. My opinion is that if you can't say it to someones face, then you probably shouldn't be saying it at all.

ReplyDelete"NFL increases offer to 400 fans who missed out on Super Bowl"
*yahoo sports*
This is talking about how 400 fans got tickets to the super bowl and could not take there sits because it was said to be unsafe. So the NFL will give them tickets to a super bowl they want to go to and pay for airfare and hotel. I think this is fare after flying out to Texas and buying tickets.
I read "Suspension helped Green reach next level" from *yahoo sports*. My article was about how one of the top collage wide outs in football sold a game jersey. He didn't have the right to sell it but he thought he did. He got suspended by the NCAA for the first four games of the '10 season. He felt like he had to catch up and thats exactly what he did. He came out and had an amazing season! The authors opinion was that the suspension helped Green become a better man which would help him be a better NFL player. I agree with the author, Green getting in trouble made him relies he could lose his dream in a blink of an eye. This made him try and play even harder then normal.

*Oregonian* *Freezing the poor*, the author's opinion is about how much money we spend on the military and not on the poor, the auther complains about how 1 in 8 people in the u.s are on food stamps , And also do not have health insurance, the auther says it has also has been one of the coldest winter's and we are doing nothing to help the poor,
ReplyDeleteMy opinion is, we as a Nation we should help the poor and the military at the same time they both need our support without our support we as a nation wont go anywere!

I read "Didn't call anyone moron today? That's normal" from the *Oregonian*. The author's opinion is that people are actually quite nice and that the news only shows people's rudeness. Her refuting is "My first instinct is to see these stories as more proof that civility is dead, and that we will soon communicate entirely through angry grunts. But lately, I’ve begun to see this incivility thing as real and troubling but also blown out of proportion, like the risk of shark attacks. The bigger story here is this: Most people communicate all day long — under stress and in circumstances that encourage rudeness — and choose to be civil." I think that the author is right. More people are nice than people are rude.

I read "Didn't call anyone a moron today? thats normal" from *The Oregonian*. The article is abut technology and how we use it to insult others to easily. The Author says " no eye contact required, just fire away and move on." The author is trying to say that we take insults and blow them out of proportion where as anything nice goes unnoticed. I think this is true. People are always rubbing others the wrong way and we sometimes have to say bad things. But we hold our toungs more than not.

I read"Cardinals can't come to terms with pujols." *Oregonian*. This Article explains, that Albert Pujols was the Cardinals best offer for there team. There wrong. Albert may be going to a open market next fall. People are getting better deals for Albert, and Albert doesn't like the Cardinals deal anymore. Albert is playing with the Cardinals one more year and it looks like he has a decision to make after the next season is over. Good Article.

I read "Cabrera is lost on a bleak stretch of road" from *The New York Times*. The opinion in the article is that Cabrera should be traded to a new team because is he getting into a lot of trouble in Detroit. The counterargument is that everybody wants Cabrera to be the man, not the man in jail. My opinion is that Cabrera needs to get some help for is problem and if he changes he can stay.

I read "Didn't call anyone a moron today? Thats normal." This article is about how people act different when they are at work. Most people are polite at work and when they get irritated they are still polite anyways. The authors opinion is not very well stated. My opinion on this is, I think the article is true. People have to be nice to keep there job.
ReplyDeleteIn the article " Big Ben Unable to deliver this time" by Les Carpender it talks about how Ben couldn't pull his stuff together to win the big game. Throughout the game Ben's knees hurt and a lot of his teammates were unable to play or was injured during the game. Also Ben was really quiet about his injury.
ReplyDeleteBrandon Espy In the article "Big Ben unable to deliver this time" from *yahoo sports* by Les carpenter, tells us how the starting quarter back for the Steelers wasn't able to get them a super bowl win. The opinion was that this wasn't the big Ben every one was expecting to see. the proof is that it says "this wasn't the big been which was obvious as he floated in the start of the game". i agree he didnt do to well cause he was floating high passes.

This article says that Dale Earnhardt Jr wrecked in practice and had to go to dead last. The author was saying that junior is gonna have to get a new car. It talks about how he should of been not driving, and just not driven that practice. It sucks for him but its his fault.
Jonah Thornbrough
I read "Didn't call anyone a moron today? Thats normal," by Susan Niesen, from *The Oregonian.* The article states that most peaple spend most of there tome trying not to be rude. Most peaple are verry successful at this. But those who are not make the headlines. The authors opinion is that she finds this troubling, but blone out of proportion. That there is way to many who do the right thing to say that we are not civil. "I’m thinking here of the many state lawmakers who don’t use the word “moron” in their official correspondence.
ReplyDeleteAnd of teachers who respond politely to parent e-mails, even when they’re fried at the end of a long day.
And of window salesmen, mortgage brokers and nurses who are sorely tempted to make their daily irritations clear, but don’t." I agree with the author. When so many peaple do the right thing and are civil, there is always going to be a couple peaple who are not.

I read "A Doctor Beaten by Police" by Sean Patrick from the *New York Times*. A doctor was beaten for trying to help some hurt protesters. People are trying to figure out who is in the wrong. The police officer has no chargers and neither does the doctor. I think the police officer should go to jail for hurting some one who is trying to help.

I read, "A monopoly on cheating" in *The New York Times*. This article is about how the new Monopoly game prevents cheating. The author relates this to real life situations and wants the Obama administration to work harder to be like the game and prevent people who are "cheats". The author gives examples from both sides of the argument and it shows that he wants there to be less cheating in America.
ReplyDeleteI read "A Monopoly on Cheating" in the *New York Times* written BY SAM LIPSYTE. The author expresses his opinion on cheaters, and the new "cheater-proof" Monopoly game. His opinion is that he respects cheaters for being brave enough to cheat, and he likes the idea of the new game. I also like the idea of an uncheatable game, because it could be useful to teach kids rules aren't always bad, or, it could make help the kids push there limits and break the boundaries. Either way, I think it could be useful in someway.
