  1. I read the article " Unrest Grows in Bahrain as Police Kill a 2nd Protester" by Michael Slackman on the New York Times website. This is about a protest in Bahrain where 10,000 people gathered in the country's capital of Pearl Square to protest and ask for peace. They chanted "peace" and " were not sunni were not shite we just want to be free" and then a protester was shot by one of the police officers. I think its really unfair that the people are pushed to a movement like this by their government and then the goernment paid police officers shot some of the protesters.

  2. Obama, GOP duck hardest cuts
The federal budget nibbles at the edges but avoids the mandatory spending programs
    By KEVIN G. HALL
    McCLATCHY-TRIBUNE

This article is about our Presidents trying to stop our spending. The budget that Obama offered to share on Monday, failed to show all the problems that are hurting us and threatening our country to go bankrupt. This budget does reduce some of our spending, but it also passes the problems of increasing costs of Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. All of those things are mandatory and needed.
Without a way and a solution we are going to put ourself's in greater debt. We need the money to function, but we also need to find a way to reduce our spending. If we all pitch in and only buy the essentials then our government spending should go down. I just feel like American's are greedy spenders who are the main part in the problem and won't help in finding the solution.

  3. I read "Report Details Sabotage of Birth Control" From *New York Times*
This article is about men Emotionally and physically abusing there women. 1 in 4 women agreed to answer some questions and they had told the report that their partner had pressured them into getting pregnant. The men had told there partner to not take pills and to have unprotected sex. These questions were answered by 3,000 women. "This was not a reasearch paper." Said the women that were involved. The reporter that had asked the questions heard stories about men refusing to wear condoms, for sex with out condoms, poking holes into the condoms and men flushing birth control pills down the toilet.
I think this is very unhealthy and very wrong. If anyone is getting abused like this needs to walk away. This is abuse and no woman deserves that kind of treatment.

I read "Teamates are given the credit" on the *Oregonian*. On january 24 aldridge was rewarded player of the week for the first time in his career. On monday he became the 3rd Blazer to win the weekly award 2 times in a season. he gave most the credit to his teamates though. Aldridge is no. 13 in rebounding this season. I think that Aldridge should have made the allstar team this year.

I found an article in The Oregonian about Esparanza Spalding, winner of the Best New Artist Grammy. Esparanza was born and raised in Portland, Ore. and faced up against other new artists like Mumford & Sons, Florence & the Machine, and Justin Beiber. Esparanza is a jazzy bassist and a singer. Her winning a Grammy is a surprise, because it's uncommon for jazz artists get nominated for this Grammy. I think it's really cool that a girl right here from Portland won a Grammy. And she's really good too. I like her jazz music.

I found the article "Drivers say it's getting crowed out there" at The Oregonian.

Many people in the Portland area are saying that it is getting to crowed out on the streets. There are way to many traffic jams these days and that there are more car crashes. It's taking a lot more time to get to places theses days. Katie Dunwell said that it only took her 25 minutes to get to portland and now it is taking 45 minutes almost every morning. She has tried leaving earlier and latter but there is traffic between 7 and 9 in the morning. At night it's busy between 5 and 8. In conclusion she is tired of being stuck in traffic all the time but I think that she needs to get over it. Because there is just going to get worst and worst.

  9. I read '' Aldridge again wins player of week nod '' from *The Oregonian.* The article states that Blazers' forward LaMarcus Aldridge wins his second player of the week accolade since he started his All-Star run. He has averaged just under 30 points in the month of February, and still, no All-Star spot. And his stats for just this week are incredible, For the week, Aldridge has averaged 38.3 points, 7.3 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.7 blocks and shot 63.1 percent. I think that he definitely deserved the award, he has more points than Kobe Bryant and LeBron James. If he keeps doing his thing, the blazers will keep winning.

"Spokane mystery has no good solution"

In this article a bomb was placed on the route of the MLK parade route. The bomb didn't detonate, but it was sophisticated and potentially deadly. The FBI believes that it was an act of terrorism. It has caused fear in Spokane and sent them on a cycle of shock, relief, and reassessment. Shaun Winkler stated that the KKK doesn't have that kind of intelligence and the person who made the bomb was probably more of the lone-wolf type.

This years Bonnaroo music and art festival will be featuring bunches of acts by some artists you know, and maybe some you've never heard of. The festival runs from June ninth through twelfth in Manchester, Tennessee. Some of these artists will include; Eminem, Arcade Fire, Buffalo Springfield, The Strokes, The Decemberists, Lil Wayne, Gogol Bordello, The Black Keys, Opeth, and so many more. Sounds like fun to me! Those are a bunch of bands I sure wouldn't mind seeing. Festivals mean awesome music and fantastic food, always sounds like a blast to me.

He is going to the all stare game and was either picked by fans, or coaches. He is said to be the "best player in the league right now." -Coach McMillan. I read "Berlusconi to Face Trial in Under-Age Prostitution Case" in the *New York Times.* This article was about a judge ordering Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi to stand trial in April on charges of prostitution and abuse of office. Berlusconi faces charges for paying for sex with an under-age nightclub dancer nicknamed Ruby Heart-Stealer, and abused his office to help release her from police custody when she was detained for theft. This scandal has overtaken political debate in Italy for a while now. It said in the article that he has no intentions to step down. I read "Drivers say it’s getting crowded out there" By Joseph Rose from *The Oregonian* It's an article about people believing that there is too much traffic. There are many ideas about why there's more traffic, for instance, Katie Dunwell took 25 minutes to go to work but now he take 45 minutes.Tim Duy said there is a steady stream of cars and trucks the entire way he drives to work.

The Oregon Department of Transportation says there are not more cars on the road so it hard to tell which side is right.

I think there are more cars because cars make traveling convenient. Some families buy car for their children, but if there are more car, so it makes the traffic jams.

  17. Web of Popularity, Achieved by Bullying
    Tara Parker- Pope
    *The New York Times*

This article describes popularity ranks in high schools. At U.C. Davis, sociology students took a study of 3,772 students in grades eighth to 10th grade to list their friends and if they had ever been a target to bullying or if they had taken part in it. In typical cases you see a social outcast being bullied, somebody with no friends. But, the result of this study indicates the increases in social status is associated with increases in aggression. Aggressive behavior topped at the 98th percentile of popularity and then dropped. "At the very top you start to see a reversal - the kids in the top 2 percent are less likely to be aggressive," Dr. Faris said. "The interpretation I favor is that they no longer need to be aggressive because they're at the top, and further aggression could be counterproductive, signaling insecurity with their social position. "
I think that this discovery in how social climbing works in teens is really interesting, I used to think of the stereotypical types of bullying, like how "nerds" or social outcasts are the ones being harassed. When actually, the more popular people are targeted most when it comes to aggressiveness. This cycle of gossip and rumors is a constant climb to be at the top of the food chain. I like what Robert Faris added in the article, he said, "What we think often is going on is that this is part of the way kids strive for status. Rather than going after the kids on the margins, they might be targeting kids who are rivals." It's bullying from a very different perspective.

  18. I read the article "Drivers Say It's Getting Crowded out there" by, Joseph Rose. The article's main point is that the roads, highways, and freeways are getting way to crowded, and it takes twice as long to get to your destination as use to. He even has direct quotes from drivers that have noticed the change. I think that the reason that the highways are getting way more crowded is because our world's population is getting larger and larger every day. Therefore, we get multiple drivers then we did the previous years. Plus, they were discussing about how it was really crowded between 9-7 a.m. and that's because people usually start work or school between those times.

  19. In the article, "Good Rivalry Fuels MLS Hopefully," by Geoffrey C. Arnold shows why Freddie Braun and Jake Gleeson are fighting for the roster spots with the Timbers. Freddie and Jake are friends, they support each other on the soccer field to win the roster spots. They are both enjoying practicing with the Timbers but they both know that they can be either the best or one of the best players on the team. They both were star soccer players when they were on their last team. The Timbers see a future in both of them. One thing a lot of teams don't have is two best friends that are both amazing players and support each other.

I read the article "Report Details Sabotage of Birth Control" from *New York Times.* This article talked about a recent small study done by a Domestic Violence Hotline that proved a theory about abusive husbands hiding their partner's birth control pills and/ or forcing them to get pregnant. The small study was not a conducted research study. It was based on a series of questions asked to women who called the Domestic Violence Hotline. About 10,000 women called in to the hotline between August and September of 2010. Of those 10,000 women, about 3,000 answered the questions which confirmed the Hotline's theory about abusive or violent husbands hiding birth control pills and forcing their partners to get pregnant is a sign of a need of control from the husband and forced loyalty from the partner.
I think this article is very interesting and I'm curious about the study of this. I wonder what caused the Hotline to make this theory and want to confirm it.

The article explains how the Obama plan would cut the governments spending over the next ten years, and it's immediate government impact. It also highlights how the Republicans plan would cut the government in the wrong places leading to smaller, short term benefits. I hope that the republicans are not so thickheaded that they cant see the need for a long term plan to cut spending, and that the plan does not get so garbled that it is ineffective by the time it comes out of voting. This bill has the potential to be a steppingstone to a smaller, more efficient government.

One of the studies talked about in this article describes how teenagers will use bullying to get higher up in rank of popularity. Teenagers will most likely go after rivals in close rank, in hopes to go up in the food chain. To most researchers, this is surprising, but to me, being a high school student, I totally understand it. I have been a victim of bullying, and that is exactly how it works. Everyone has been a victim, whether they know it or not. It is just a never ending cycle that schools need to step in on. I'm not exactly sure what "actual gridlock" is, but I think it is when the roads are clear and you're not constantly stopping and going because of traffic. I agree with him. I personally think a good team needs dominate players, and let me tell you one thing, having Amarie Stodmire and Carmelo Anthony on the same team will be dominate. With Stodmire down low and melo on the wing, the Knicks will probably be a better team with the addition of Carmelo Anthony.

  54. I read "Shaq rehabbing injured leg in Florida" on Yahoo Sports. Shaq is rehabbing his injured right leg near his Florida home and is not expected to rejoin the Boston Celtics until after their West Coast trip. I think Shaq is to old to be in the NBA right now, and he is just hurting himself. He is pretty old and should retire at his age. He is now very effective in the NBA now as he used to be in L.A and Orlando.

  55. I read "Following her big sister's lead" by Larry Bingham in *The Oregonian*. It talks about how Erica Wu a senior in Benson Polytechnic High School was crowned as princess in the Rose Festival Court. She says that her role model is her older sister who too had been crowned as princess at the Rose Festival Court a couple years back. Erica explains how she had gone from a shy freshman girl to a leader by stepping out of her comfort zone to try out for the volleyball team.
